Is Voyage of the Dawn Treader on Disney Plus
Disney+ has finally released in the United Kingdom - but there are a surprising number of movies missing from its library. The Disney+ streaming service launched last November in the United States, and the House of Mouse is in the process of releasing it in different territories. In the case of the U.K., Disney+'s release was delayed by a previous contract with Sky.
The Disney+ U.K. catalog is still a little smaller than the US, though, as a result of other distribution deals for individual movies; that's particularly a problem with some of the Fox films, which were negotiated well before Rupert Murdoch considered selling the bulk of his film and TV empire to Disney. For all that's the case, though, the library is strikingly impressive.
So just what films are missing from Disney+ in the U.K.? Here are some of the most noteworthy absences, followed by a comparison between the US and U.K. releases.
The MCU Isn't Quite Complete - And Never Will Be
The Marvel tab on Disney+ is in a very health state indeed, with the vast majority of MCU movies available for streaming. There are, however, three exceptions:
- The Incredible Hulk
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- Spider-Man: Far From Home
This is because of problems with distribution rights, which were sold to Universal and Sony long before Marvel was purchased by Disney. These rights are unlikely to revert any time soon; Universal seem quite happy with the status quo, while Sony is developing its own Spider-Man spinoff universe, potentially an adjunct to the MCU itself.
It's interesting to note that Marvel Studios is planning aShe-Hulk TV series for Disney+, which may indicate Universal only own distribution rights for Hulk movies. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Spider-Man; back in 2014, a copy of the Marvel-Sony contract leaked, and it confirmed Sony own the rights to "live-action television series (and also animated television series with episodes longer than 44 minutes)."
There Are Gaps In The X-Men Franchise On Disney+
Curiously, there are also significant gaps in Disney+ U.K.'s X-Men coverage. The missing films are:
- X-Men: First Class
- X-Men: Apocalypse
- X-Men: Dark Phoenix
- Deadpool
- Deadpool II
- Logan
Presumably most of this is due to prior distribution contracts negotiated by Fox before Disney acquired these movies, although it's unclear whyX-Men: Days of Future Past wouldn't be affected as well. In the case ofLogan and theDeadpool films, those are simply age-inappropriate; Disney is attempting to ensure Disney+ is family-friendly, and they would be decidedly off-brand. The absence ofOnce Upon A Deadpool, the PG-13 adaptation ofDeadpool II, is a little surprising though; that was generally seen as a trial run for PG-13 Deadpool.
Some of the Fantastic Four Films Are Missing As Well
Fox previously owned the film rights to the Fantastic Four as well as the X-Men, but amusingly only one of their three films is present on Disney+ in the U.K.:Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. This seems strangely arbitrary, given it's actually a sequel to a 2005 movie that's not on the streaming service at all. Nobody is really going to be particularly interest in Josh Trank's critically-derided 2015 reboot.
Disney Is Determined To Pretend Song Of The South Never Happened
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed Song of the South will never appear on Disney+. Released in 1946, this film is set during the American Civil War during the Reconstruction shortly after the end of the war and the abolition of slavery. The story is centered upon a kid named Johnny, who befriends one of the plantation workers.Song of the South is generally considered racist and revisionist due to its refusal to confront the issue of slavery and its portrayal of the plantations as idyllic. This is most notable in scenes where Uncle Remus optimistically declares things are much better now, before launching into the famous song "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." Disney has consistently attempted to downplaySong of the South, steadfastly refusing to release it on home video and DVD, and they have no intention of putting it on any version of Disney+ either.
Rise of Skywalker, Onward, Frozen, 2, & Malelifcent 2 Aren't On Disney+ Yet
A number of recent titles are notably absent from Disney+, specificallyMaleficent: Mistress of Evil,Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, andOnward. It's a shame the Skywalker saga isn't complete on release, but hopefully it will be rectified soon; presumably Disney is wary of sabotaging the film's home release. The disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic has forced Disney to releaseOnward digitally early, and it will release on Disney+ on April 3 in the US. Sadly, due to existing agreementsFrozen 2 will only be available on Disney+ in the U.K. from July 17.
The Chronicles of Narnia Are Incomplete
Disney co-produced the first twoChronicles of Narnia films, but the third -The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - was distributed by Fox. In theory, that should mean the distribution rights are now owned by Marvel, butVoyage of the Dawn Treader is still missing from Disney+ in the U.K.. This may indicate some sort of clause in the contract meaning the distribution rights reverted to the C.S. Lewis estate, but there's no information about this point.
The U.K.'s Disney+ Has Some More Absences
